Record low water on 20 October

On Friday 20 October, things turned out quite differently: this time there were gale-force winds from the east (gusts of up to 45 knots). While the water rose over the banks on the Baltic coast, the tide did not bring back enough water here: it was a record low water level of 1.90 metres below normal low water. The ships now lacked much more than the famous hand's breadth of water under the keel in the fairway off Dagebüll; they therefore remained in the harbours in this situation until the water level was sufficient to continue their journey. There was a difference of around 6 metres between the high and low water levels within 7 days!
